James Owen

Managing Director of Control Risks India and South Asia

James Owen is Senior Managing Director of Control Risks India and South Asia. Based in New Delhi, he has overall responsibility for Control Risks throughout the subcontinent, supporting a wide range of private and public sector clients through comprehensive risk mitigation strategies in the region.

Since joining Control Risks, James has played key roles in London, Moscow and India, advising companies on strategies to manage integrity, political and security risks and to maximise their commercial opportunities. James previously led the firm’s Compliance, Forensics and Intelligence business in South Asia, having earlier led the same service line in Russia and the CIS.

In South Asia, James has:

  • Acted as a strategic advisor to MNCs and domestic Indian organisations facing corruption investigations, often on problem solving tasks involving crisis management support
  • Overseen investment support and compliance-driven business intelligence engagements, assessing opportunities and risks in relation to acquisitions, new relationships and important stakeholders
  • Assessed fraud, corruption and other compliance and regulatory risks for clients operating across multiple industry sectors in the region, helping them to develop and implement robust prevention programmes
  • Managed a wide variety of reactive investigations involving the use of data analytics, IT forensics, forensics accounting and investigative interviewing

James came to Control Risks from the Foreign Policy Centre, a London-based think tank, where he advised the British government, NGOs and private sector clients on political and economic issues in Eurasia and the Middle East. Prior to this he worked in consulting for Accenture in China, Europe and the United States.

James speaks Russian and Spanish. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Modern European History from York University and a Master of Arts in Russian Politics from University College London. James contributes to the media and writes on issues related to business and political risk in India and Russia.
